In this Bandcamp Review, we look at one of the most popular places to sell your music online. However, to sell your music, we must first answer a couple of basic questions. What is Bandcamp and How Does it Work?
Now you no longer need to be a struggling artist waiting for that major record label to call, when you can just sell your music on a website like Bandcamp.
Yes, people will actually buy your music if it’s half-decent, so you just need to find where they hang out.
What is Bandcamp?
The team at Bandcamp started out life working out of a public library in 2008 and have grown into a multi-million dollar business with over 28 employees in 2015. Bandcamp makes the connection between musicians and fans so art can continue to be made.
It’s online music portals allows fans to discover new music and then purchase and download a copy immediately.
And as music is best served on the go, you can also download the Bandcamp app for iOS and Android.
How Does Bandcamp Work?
First you sign-up for free with Bandcamp. Then you upload your music and configure your fan experience.
With Bandcamp, you can allow your fans to get unlimited streaming access to your music and/or download a high-quality version for playback while offline.
You have total control over the pricing and can offer to let your fans pay what they think your music is worth. (Bandcamp suggests fans can pay up to 50% more than the minimum price you set)
You can even offer discount codes to kickstart a new release or to reward your raving fans.
You get real-time statistics on what is being listened to and for how long and when these tracks are being purchased.
And Bandcamp is fully search optimized, which means when fans search for your name online, they are likely to find your Bandcamp page so they can have an opportunity to purchase your music.
But Bandcamp can handle more than digital products. You can even bundle physical products side-by-side with your digital offerings, to create a seamless transaction for your customers.
Fans of Bandcamp have access to unlimited streaming and re-downloads of past purchases.
They can create a wishlist register so they can easily find the music they loved.
Fans can also subscribe to an artist so they never miss a new release and share music easily with their friends.
But best of all, fans can use Bandcamp to discover thousands of new artist they never knew existed.
Let’s learn a little more about Bandcamp in this Bandcamp review video…
How to Make Money with Bandcamp
As a musician, your primary goal is to make music and the selling of that music shouldn’t impede your ability to make more art.
Bandcamp allows you to bypass the outdated record label machine and to publish your work independently, taking responsibility for your own promotions and artwork.
Of course, you first need to make and produce the music.
Next you’ll want to set up an account on Bandcamp and start uploading music.
You create an artists page on Bandcamp which can simply be your album artwork.
Then set the price you want to charge or let your fans decide.
Finally, you’ll want to promote your music to your social media circles with a link to your Bandcamp page and perhaps a discount code to make the offer even more enticing.
If your music is decent, your raving fans should start to spread your message for you.
And if you’ve uploaded music videos on Youtube then make sure you link back to your page, so your new fans have the option to purchase your music directly.
It really is that easy and Bandcamp lets you get back to the things that you do best.
Bandcamp Referral Program
At the time of publishing, there wasn’t a Bandcamp Referral Program available.
Being on Bandcamp is a really smart move if you’re an independent artist, but there are no guarantees of sales.
You will need to do a fair bit of promotion to get the word out, but at least, you’ll have somewhere your fans can purchase your music when they are ready.
NB: The MONEYBAGS rating has been lowered because there is clearly a culture of people looking for BandCamp Downloaders, which can only mean there is a lot of piracy going on with BandCamp. Ultimately this means less money in your pocket.
Hopefully, Bandcamp will address this in future builds.
Potential Earnings: 6-MONENYBAGS
The music industry is crazily competitive, but using Bandcamp, at least, gives you a chance at success.
Time Required: 2.5+ Hours
Setting up your music and artists page on Bandcamp will take some time.
